Why you should be thinking about NED or Trustee roles (Even if you haven’t yet).
24 March 2026
For many professionals, the idea of becoming a Non-Executive Director (NED) simply never crosses their mind.
It’s often seen as something reserved for “later in your career,” or for a select group of people with very specific backgrounds. But the truth is – if you’ve built up years of experience, developed expertise, and learned how to navigate challenges in your field, you may already have something incredibly valuable to offer.
You just might not realise it yet.
I speak to many very accomplished individuals who haven’t previously explored NED/Trustee opportunities – not because they lack the capability, but because it has never occurred to them or they don’t know where to start.
Your skills – whether in leadership, finance, operations, strategy, people management, or industry-specific knowledge – are not just transferable, but highly desirable. Boards need individuals who can challenge thinking, bring fresh insights, and contribute to balanced decision-making.
And that’s where you come in.
Many people underestimate the value of what they’ve built over their careers. The lessons learned, the risks taken, the problems solved – these are exactly the kinds of experiences that can make an effective NED/Trustee.
Being a NED/Trustee isn’t about knowing everything. It’s about asking the right questions, offering thoughtful guidance, and helping organisations see what they might otherwise miss.
It’s also a two-way street.
‘Whatever you put in, you will get so much more back’
If a NED or Trustee role is something you aspire to, gaining initial experience through an unremunerated position can be a valuable step – often, though not exclusively, within the third sector.
The starting point is to be intentional.
Firstly, choose or identify organisations that genuinely matter to you. An organisation where you care about the mission, the impact, or the people involved. Because the most effective Trustees aren’t just technically strong – they’re invested. They show up differently, ask better questions, and contribute with real purpose.
For many who take this step, it becomes one of the most rewarding aspects of their professional journey.
So, if you’ve never considered becoming a Trustee before, now might be the time to start.
Not because you need to change your career – but because you can enhance it.
Your experience is not just valuable. It’s Invaluable.
